HTCS fun in Kasra
This is a walk-through of things you can do with HTCS in Kasra, and also covers some basic HTCS things. I’m going to gloss over a few things, and point out others. If something seems really confusing, or raises your curiosity, please drop a line to Baroun@HouseTardis.net
When you first get your meter, just wear it. It’ll drop to the lower right HUD. It’ll default to 7’s on all six stats: Strength, Endurance, Dexterity, Intelligence, Education and Standing. You have the option of setting them to what you want, and that becomes a big deal later on. You don’t have to do it right away, but at some point you should. HTCS gives you 50 points to spread between them. I strongly suggest 7’s as a minimum. Getting below a 5 can get you in trouble.
My first suggestion would be to head for the “crops” near the school house, and pick everything you can. Click on a plant, and if a new fruit/cob/sheaf has grown, it’ll appear. Pick that up and keep it in your inventory. Get one of each thing, at least. HTCS gives you “Farmer” experience for this, but there’s a cap on how much you can get in one day, so after you get a few, do it again tomorrow. The daily routine brings more bonuses than binging.
Once you have a few things, head for the Airship Tower. Watch for Capt. Major’s airship to arrive, and sell him the stuff you picked. This will put some money in your pocket. You can do this as much as you want, but you’ll slowly ‘glut the market’ and the amount you get paid per item drops.
When you get a fair bit of change in your pocket, head down to the gun shop. There’s a few things for sale there you can buy with Credits (and a bunch you can spend L$ on. I do appreciate the L$... it costs about L$4000/month to run the server for HTCS.) Pick up a weapon you can afford.
If you want to spend some L$, there’s a Flag vendor there. Flags are a catch all - things your persona in HTCS can do, skill markers, racial/species special ability markers. They also are things your “background” gives you. For example, someone with the “Army” Flag is tougher in a fight than a person without it.
If you’re feeling lucky, swing by the Saloon and try the blackjack table. This takes either L$ or HTCS Credits, and pays out in Credits. This can give you the ability to get some extra cash and pick up more/better stuff.
Once you’ve got a revolver, head for the haunted house on the Club/Market level. Explore it, and in the basement you’ll find the start to the “Kasra Sword Quest.” Finishing this one will get you a “Blade”, a kind of short sword thing. (If you’re very nimble, you can do this one without the revolver)
With the Blade and Revolver, you’re pretty well armed. I’d suggest that , from there, you go hunting. The small island with the ruins often has rabbits. Kill one with the revolver and one with the blade each day. This will mark you some experience with both weapons, working around the daily cap.
Another thing to do is watch for the Calling Card Trays in the Mayor’s house, and in Joelle’s shop in the Market. Dropping off your card each day gives “Social” experience points.
For a change of pace, visit Barry the Baker (near the gun shop) and do the “Salt” quest.
You’ll get a set of cookware as a reward.
Another thing you can do at Barry’s is borrow his kitchen.
One thing you can do there is make some bread.
Take some wheat or corn (you got it at the farming patch near the school)
Rez it on the counter/tabletop of the oven
Stand close to it and type “/5 make flour”
The grain (wheat/corn/rice/whatever) will turn into a bag of flour. (You’re using Barry’s tools to do this)
Type “/5 make bread” and the bag of flour will turn into a box of bread.
Side note: If you type “/5 how bread”, you’ll see the list of minimum ingredients you need to make it. Barry’s kitchen provides a ‘real’ kitchen, which covers the ‘field kitchen’ issue. It has a place in the kitchen that’s got a fire, which covers ‘burning’. It has water. If you get the urge to make bread elsewhere, then you’ll need the field kitchen you got in the quest, plus water and a fire of some sort. “/5how lighter” or “/5 how fire” are useful here. You can get water at the town well.
Making bread gives you the “Baker” Brag, since you successfully baked _something_.
Making any food gives you “Cooking” experience, which leads to skill Flags needed to make more complex foods. (Check out “/5how stew” or “/5how breaded fish”)
Typing “/5 eat” will let you eat. “/5drink” drinks. Some things, eaten or drunk, help you heal more quickly. If you get a message about being tired, eating or drinking something will generally perk you up.
At some point each day:
Harvest at least one plant
Kill one bunny rabbit (NOT SUSIE!!), or fish, or crab, or monster with each weapon type
Drop one calling card
Craft one item
Then in about a week to two weeks, you’ll see a sudden bunch of stat increases and new Flags and Brags.
I’m leaving out a bunch of other things in the sim, and we’re adding more every couple weeks. I’m also leaving out “live events” like Tuesday night Saloon Stories (5PM SLT) , and the semi-live events like “Airship Pirate Attack” (where airship pirates raid the sim, and you get to shoot at them for fun and profit.)
